Marit Bjoergen lived up to her billing as the hot favorite by winning the womens 15-kilometer skiathlon at Sochi on Saturday, giving the Norwegian cross-country skier her fourth career Olympic gold medal. Bjoergen pulled away from Swedens Charlotte Kalla on the final straight to win in 38 minutes, 33.6 seconds and defend her title from the 2010 Vancouver Games. Kalla was 1.8 seconds back. Heidi Weng of Norway took bronze. Bjoergen was the most successful athlete of the Vancouver Games with three gold medals, a silver and a bronze and showed right away she has the ability to match that feat in Sochi. With a group of five skiers staying together until the last kilometer, Kalla tried to pull away in the final tough uphill section and decide the race before the final sprint. Only Bjoergen was able to match her pace going up the hill, and the Norwegian then went in front as they entered the stadium. Kalla had no answer for the strong finish by Bjoergen, who had time to turn her head and then raise her arm in celebration as she crossed the line. The skiathlon event starts with 7.5 kilometers of classical-style skiing before switching to freestyle, making it a tough test of the athletes all-round abilities. Kalla won the 10K freestyle event in Vancouver four years ago and showed she has vastly improved her classical style skiing since then. She has never finished on the podium in a skiathlon on the World Cup circuit and celebrated as if she had won on Saturday, raising her arms to celebrate as she crossed the line behind Bjoergen and then jumping up and down holding her skis in the air. She prevented a Norwegian sweep of the medals, with Therese Johaug finishing fourth. Aino-Kaisa Saarinen of Finland was fifth. Justyna Kowalczyk of Poland, a three-time overall World Cup winner who has been struggling with a foot injury, was with the leading group of seven skiers at the halfway mark but slipped and fell just as she was about to enter her station for the ski change and lost several seconds. She exited the ski change 7.4 seconds behind Kalla, and never came any closer during the freestyle. Entering the last lap, she was nearly 19 seconds behind and she finished sixth, 58.1 seconds back. The next womens event is the individual freestyle sprint on Tuesday, when Bjoergen is again among the favorites. The mens 30K skiathlon is Sunday. But life has changed. Im just fortunate now to get to see more people, better people, getting to train with more coaches, said the 26-year-old from Mississauga, Ont. Same job, just better office, he added. Theodorou, who won his TUF Nations title in April, returns to action Saturday in Halifax against Brazilian Bruno Santos. Welterweight Rory Ares MacDonald takes on American-based Belgian Tarec (Sponge) Saffiedine in the main event of the televised card at the Scotiabank Centre as the UFC makes is first foray into Atlantic Canada. The 25-year-old MacDonald, a native of Kelowna, B.C., who trains out of Montreal, is ranked No. 2 among welterweight contenders while the 28-year-old Saffiedine is No. 9. Its one of two UFC cards Saturday. Icelands Gunnar Nelson, ranked 12th among welterweight contenders, faces Rick The Horror Story in the main event of a Stockholm show, which is being shown by the UFCs Fight Pass online subscription service. Theodorou is a larger-than-life character whose resume reads actor, model, stuntman, dancer, TV pitchman and Harlequin Romance cover boy as well as fighter. He says he is always looking to expand his brand both inside and outside the cage. It has not been all nose to the grindstone for Theodorou since defeating Sheldon Westcott via second-round TKO. After the fight I got to enjoy a couple of dance floors and some extracurricular activities, he said. Perhaps as a result, the six-foot-one Theodorou put on some happy weight, getting as high as 230ish. But he says he has trimmed pounds via good nuttrition.dddddddddddd Science is going to allow me basically to be 185 for about an hour. Theodorou (9-0) says hes realistic about what winning the reality TV show meant. The hard work lies ahead. I literally just got my place in the race now ... Now it begins with Bruno Santos. The stocky five-foot-nine Brazilian likes to take people down. Hes a tough dude, said Theodorou. Hes 14-1. What he basically does, even though not it may not be that exciting, (is) he just grabs a hold of you, picks you up and does exactly what he needs to do to win. He breaks his opponents to be completely honest with you. Hes very headstrong. Hes very focused on what he wants to do. But I think Im just equally as headstrong and a little better technically ... Every time he tries to grab a hold of me, similar to Sheldon, Im just going to say no. Im going to punch him, Im going to kick him and Im going to move. Its not too easy to grab a hold of something thats moving. Especially when it kicks you in the head. Theodorou believes he can showcase his standup skills in the fight. During the reality TV show, he used his grappling to control his opponents. The 27-year-old Santos is 1-1 in the UFC with a win over Krzysztof Jotko and a loss to Chris Camozzi. Theodorous camp for this fight has included time in the Toronto area (Headrush Training Center and the Tapout Burlington Training Centre) and Montreal (Tristar Gym, Titans Academy, BTT Canada and the Montreal Wrestling Club). In Montreal, he got to train with MacDonald. Theodorou is no stranger to Halifax, having stopped Mike Kent in the first round of an Extreme Cage Combat card in May 2013. Ive fought in Halifax before and its going to be another home away from home.
