The NHL trade deadline is officially over. The list of dizzying moves separated the contenders from pretenders and brought some clarity heading into the home stretch.
While some teams that landed major players in order to make a playoff push, just as many teams left us scratching our heads Richard Sherman Jersey .
Now that the dust has settled, we're here to help make sense of all. Here are Sporting News' winners and losers of the 2022 NHL trade deadline.
MORE:
Winner: Maple LeafsThe Maple Leafs needed to improve on defense at the deadline if they really wanted to contend for a Cup. General manager Kyle Dubas did just that, acquiring veteran Mark Giordano from the Kraken.
Dubas didn't want to use his first-round pick in a trade and with Giordano wanting to go to Toronto, Dubas was able to acquire him, along with forward Colin Blackwell, for two seconds and a third.
The fact that they didn't trade for a goaltender isn't as big of a deal as some Maple Leafs fans may think. It's still a concern for now with rookie Erik Kallgren the de facto starter with Jack Campbell sidelined and Petr Mrzaek sent down to the AHL. But if Campbell can return from injury and be better than the goaltender the Maple Leafs saw the last three months, Toronto will be in good shape.

Loser: StarsIt's always tough to navigate the deadline when a team is right on the cusp on a playoff spot. Do you sell and admit defeat? Or buy and make an honest postseason push?
The Stars elected to do nothing.
In a vacuum, perhaps that would be fine except for the fact that general manager Jim Nill e sentially sent two different me sages by not making a move. They didn't acquire any major piece, so it doesn't appear as though they are a team that doesn't think they can make a serious run in the postseason. Which makes sense, considering a first-round matchup with the Avalanche or Flames likely looms ahead if they sneak in as a Wild Card.
But while they stood pat, the Stars also failed to move John Klingberg, who requested a trade earlier in the season and does not appear to be re-signing this offseason. He would have been a great trade chip, with a number of teams interested in the right-handed defenseman. Instead Tom Rathman Jersey , Dallas elected to hold onto him for the rest of the year.
So which is it, Nill? Why keep Klingberg for the rest of the season while not making any other moves to make the club better?
Winner: KrakenRon Francis had a BUSY deadline, shipping off six players and in return, gaining back 10 draftpicks in total. He didn't get another first-round pick, mi sing out on that opportunity in the Giordano deal, but did get a higher than expected return on others, like Jeremy Lauzon going to the Predators for a second.
As a result, the Kraken now have 34 picks spanning over the next three drafts. That's huge for the club, especially with the 2023 draft expected to be one of the deepest ones in recent years.
It's a Kyle Juszczyk Jersey team that needed to hit on order to start building its roster, well, all over again. Francis mi sed with the expansion draft and free agency last summer. But he sold off every single pending free agent the team had, with Jared McCann being the exception after signing an extension.
By acquiring all the draft picks, Francis has set up this team to build through the draft for the next three seasons.
Loser: DevilsNew Jersey sits at the bottom of the Atlantic Division, second-to-last in the Eastern Conference and in no position to sniff the postseason. While they did not have a ton of goods to sell, there was the potential for moves to be made.
Instead, general manager Tom Fitzgerald kept all his cards, failing to make an impactful move. There was the opportunity to trade away P.K. Subban (UFA), Pavel Zacha (RFA) or even MacKenzie Blackwood, who had gained interest as a goaltending solution for a contender.
But the trio remain as members of the Bradley Pinion Jersey Devils with the deadline pa sed by. Doing something is better than nothing when you're one of the worst teams in the league. Fitzgerald mi stepped and the Devils walked away with no additional future a sets.
Winner: PanthersGeneral manager Bill Zito fully embraced the "win-now" mantra, going all-in by acquiring Claude Giroux from the Flyers and Ben Chiarot from the Canadiens.
Chiarot addre sed a need on the defense's left side and it could not have come at a better time, with Aaron Ekblad going down for the rest of the regular season with a leg injury. Chiarot cannot produce the same on offense as Ekblad, but the hole left on the blue line isn't as bad.
Florida already had arguably the deepest forward group in the league. There is no doubt they are now after adding Giroux. He wanted to go to Florida to win his first Stanley Cup and with his addition, there is a good chance that comes true.
The best team in the Eastern Conference just got even better. The Panthers are going to be a handful for defenses to contain.
MORE:
Loser: OilersThe Oilers plan at the deadline should have been simple trade for a goaltender. Mike Smith can't stay healthy and Mikko Koskinen simply isn't cutting it.
General manager Ken Holland is once electing to triple down on the duo he currently has in net, as the Oilers did not acquire a goaltender. It's a baffling move Joshua Garnett Jersey considering the Oilers give up 3.16 goals per game, ranking 21st in the league. Only the Wild are averaging more goals per game among teams currently in a playoff spot, and they just added Marc-Andre Fleury.
I like the additions of Brett Kulak and Derrick Bra sard to help give some depth throughout the lineup, but it's been the same story for a number of seasons now. Edmonton is wasting away the prime years of Ronnie Lott Jersey Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl because the team can't keep the puck out of their own net.
Winner: DucksPat Verbeek had a number of notable pending free agents that he tried to sign to an extension. He didn't ink any of these players, but he made the smart move to instead pivot towards trading these players and help the Ducks with their rebuild.
He sent off Hampus Lindholm, Josh Manson, Rickard Rakell and Nic Deslauriers, all pending free agents. In return, the club stocked up with a first-round pick, four second-round picks, a third-round pick, NHLers Zach Aston-Reese and Dominik Simon, in addition prospects Urho Vaakanainen, Drew Helleson and Calle Clang.
Anaheim's plummet over the last few months from a playoff position certainly helped Verbeek formulate his deadline strategy and it should pay off. The Ducks weren't in a position to win this season and were better off gaining prospects and draft capital than try and keep the band together for one more push this season.
