Parents and guardians are welcome to our interactive guide to children’s eye and vision health! Maintaining healthy vision is vital to your child's development and overall health. Let’s dive into some fun facts, tips, and activities to help keep young eyes bright and healthy.

Why is eye health important for children?
Children's eyes continue to develop, and vision problems can seriously impact their learning and development. Good vision plays a key role in how they learn to walk, read, write and interact with the world. Identifying and resolving any issues early ensures they have all the visual tools they need to succeed in school and beyond.

Eye-opening fact! 🌟
Vision development: A child's vision does not fully mature until around age 8. Before that, they are developing critical visual abilities such as depth perception and color recognition.
Prevalence of the problem: Did you know that about one in four school-age children has vision problems that, if left untreated, can affect their ability to learn?
How to spot vision problems 🕵️‍♂️
Sometimes children don't complain about vision problems because they assume everyone sees the world their way. Here are some signs that may indicate vision problems:

Rub your eyes or blink frequently
Avoid activities that require near vision (such as reading) or distance vision (such as sports)
Turn your head to one side and look directly at something
Squinting or sitting too close to the TV
Fun eye test at home 🏠
Make vision screening fun! Here are some easy, fun ways to check your child's vision:

Shape Game: Draw shapes on a piece of paper and let your child identify them from a distance. Make it a fun quiz!
Color Exploration: Let your child identify the colors of objects in the room or outside from different distances.
The secret to healthy, youthful eyes 👀
Eat a balanced diet: Foods rich in vitamins C and E, zinc, lutein and omega-3 fatty acids can help prevent age-related vision problems later in life. Think leafy greens, salmon, eggs and nuts.
Limit screen time: Too much screen time can cause eye strain. Encourage regular breaks using the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at an object 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.
Play outside: Encourage your child to play outside. Natural light is great for eye development and reduces the risk of myopia.
When to see a professional 👨‍⚕️
Vision screening is recommended for children:

6 months old
3 years old
before they start school
Regularly during school
If you notice any signs of vision problems, or if you need regular checkups, make an appointment with your pediatric ophthalmologist immediately to wear children's prescription glasses under your doctor's guidance.
